The woman is at a higher chance of miscarriage is she is over 35 or has a history of 3 or more miscarriages. If the woman has diabetes or thyroid problems, she is susceptible to miscarriage.
Miscarriage: what to do?
If the miscarriage has happened, there is no measure that is going to stop it. The woman and the doctor should be more concerned about preventing herself from infection and clearing out the remaining tissues. There are many ways of dealing with the condition-
1.No treatment (expectant management)
This method entails choosing to wait and watch. It includes the process of doing nothing about the miscarriage and waiting for the tissue to pass out of the body on its own. The tissue may pass out from the body as soon as a few days or within three or four weeks. This approach suits the situation in which there is only a minor portion of pregnancy tissue inside the body. It will cause slight pain and bleeding. In case the bleeding becomes heavy and the signs of infection show up, it is time to see a doctor.
Medications are often used to enable the tissues to pass out within a few days. But medication will not be enough if there are signs of heavy bleeding and infection. The doctor might suggest Dilation & curettage (D&C).
A minor surgery is carried out to extract the tissue through the vagina. The actual process takes only 5 – 10 minutes but some waiting and recovering period will make your hospital stay as long as 4-5 hours. If there is a lot of remaining tissue inside or infection is showing its presence, it is best to opt for this option.
You will have to deal with pain and bleeding after a miscarriage. It will usually last for a period of two weeks. You can take painkillers for dealing with the pain.
